How to Identify Authentic Banarasi Silk

Check the reverse: a hand-woven Banarasi shows neat, floating thread behind the motif, while power-loom pieces are trimmed clean.

Feel the weight. Real silk-and-zari brocade has a supple drape with a slight crispness; synthetic imitations feel slippery and light.

Ask about the weave: kadhwa, kadiyal and tanchoi each have signature construction. A trustworthy supplier will name the loom and cluster.

What to Remember

Look for the Silk Mark and GI tag where applicable, and always request a swatch before bulk orders.
